Stern College Computer Science Department

We were very happy to complete a new academic wing at Stanton Hall, the main academic building for the Stern College for Women, located at 245 Lexington Avenue, Manhattan. The entire ninth floor is devoted to their burgeoning Computer Science department, and features a lab/classroom combination, renovated classrooms and lobby.

The design brings the ambiance of a Silicon Valley start-up to this academic setting, with raw materials like concrete floors and aluminum plate wall panels. Glass and writable vinyl walls will allow for working ideas out collaboratively in a variety of locations. Interactive monitors and next-generation smart boards are featured throughout. A rolling glass partition separates a classroom from the lab, allowing both to work together when needed. The lobby is a working space, with writeable glass walls, a display monitor, and casual seating for informal learning that spills out of the classrooms.

We appreciate the support of Stern’s facilities team, led by Randy Apfelbaum and assisted by Sandhya Leonard, who persevered on the job despite covid-related construction difficulties. The students say that they flock to the floor to study – even those who are not computer science majors – because it is such a stimulating place to learn.
