Upper East Side Townhouse

This project breathes new life into an historic brownstone seamlessly blending classic charm with modern sophistication. The comprehensive gut renovation took a former multifamily apartment walk-up building and preserved the façade and iconic elements while updating layouts, systems and structure to enhance functionality and comfort as a single-family townhouse.

The project began with the historic restoration of the façade, which is limestone colored and a hallmark of its historical elegance. Townhomes line Manhattan’s Upper East Side creating these unique mid-block neighborhoods. Our work balanced modern day improvements with restoring the original historic townhouse in keeping with the scale of the neighbors.

  • New windows were installed, and fenestration above the original restored cornice is clad in lead copper which now incorporates the primary suite at the roof level. The entry door and private areaway were enlarged for better access at ground level. All structure was re-evaluated and replaced, along with the plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems.

Upon entry, a grand foyer welcomes with a blend of traditional and modern elements. This blend of classic charm with contemporary style works for both intimate gatherings and grand celebrations. The original stair was replaced and rebuilt to allow openness and light to fall from floor to floor. At the rear is the family kitchen opening to the outside rear yard space with floor to ceiling glass windows.

The main living areas on the floor above were reconfigured to maximize space and openness. Original fireplace mantles were reused and serve as focal points in the living spaces. High ceilings and ample wall space with gallery lighting allow for display of the owners art collections.

Bedrooms on the upper floors are spacious and light filled through expansive new windows, with ample storage for versatile living including built-ins and shelving for efficiency.
