Building Studio Architects wins a 2018 AIA Award

We are very proud to announce that our design for the Department of Transportation Williamsburg Bridge Paint Storage Building project was recognized as a Merit Award winner in the Commercial/Industrial – Small Projects category by the AIA Brooklyn and Queens Design Awards. Completed in 2017, this project was our first commission for New York City.

Working directly with the Department of Transportation we created a new storage building for bridge painting equipment and vehicles. Our partnership with Goldman Copeland Associates, engineers, was key to the project’s success.

Under the Brooklyn embankment of the Williamsburg Bridge, this project consolidates the facilities for the Painting Division of the Department of Transportation. Our design for a new storage building to be added the existing ensemble on the site had to respond to difficult site and access criteria as well as introduce healthy workplace elements into a storage warehouse building. The siting for the new buildings was difficult due to a variety of constraints, set by NYC codes and site parameters set by the Client. This project celebrates infrastructure at a time of national focus on listening to workers by shaping architecture to serve their needs.

Sustainable Objectives:
- Clerestory and skylights minimize need for lighting; all interior and exterior lighting is LED
- Building is fully insulated to meet or exceed NYC Energy Code
- Ground faced concrete block has a minimum of 40% certified recycled content
