Stuytown Playground - Accessibility Allows All to Beat the Heat!

As a part of our ongoing capital improvement [CapEx] work for our long-term clients Beam Living at Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village, we recently completed this accessible playground design as an amenity improvement at this community, the largest rental complex in the United States.  Built atop a subterranean garage on what appears from the outside to be natural grade, the ambitious playground had to be carefully designed within significant structural and drainage constraints.

The 2,500-sq.ft. play area incorporates two zones for two different age groups with water features separating the two; allowing children and caregivers to stay cool. The northeast corner has a unique “dreamcatcher” climbing sculpture, and the southeast side has equipment for younger children. A pavilion in the center is outfitted for year-round use with demountable walls. The playground meets all requirements for accessibility; we also considered the comfort and accommodation of supervising adults as well, with ample seating all around.
